Cupar is a historic market town located just to the north of the Lomond Hills in Fife. It is a popular day out for tourists, with some beautiful sights and experiences for every type of visitor. Located next to the River Eden and surrounded with lovely rolling hillside, this picturesque town is bursting with Scottish medieval character.
Cupar was once the county town of Fife and offers a rich history that is still prevalent today. The town thrives on its fertile land, and a large amount of quality produce is grown in the area, and the monthly farmer’s market is an excellent opportunity to pick up some local goods for yourself.
The Medieval History Of Cupar
Cupar’s unique charm comes from its colourful background and long history, after becoming the county town of Fife in 1214. At roughly the same time as becoming a county town, Cupar also gained its own castle. This castle no longer exists, but it is thought it stood in Castlefields which can still be visited today.
Many of the buildings around Cupar make it easy to see the early wealth of the area. A lot of this wealth was built on the wool trade, and the centre was a bustling marketplace that served a large part of Eastern Fife. In 1350 Cupar fell to the Black Death and lost a lot of its local dominance to St Andrews.
